Medical Anthropology, Sociology and Ethnomedicine (MASE)
From 1989 onwards, LEAD provided the yearly supervision of more than 20 MA students from Leiden University in their fieldwork training in rural Crete in cooperation with the Spili Health Center and the Department of Social and Family Medicine of the University of Crete in Heraklion. The post-graduate fieldwork encompassed MA studies in medical anthropology, sociology and ethnomedicine in the mountainous regions of Crete, amounting to a total of 26 completed MA-theses on indigenous knowledge systems and health care development in rural Crete, Greece. One candidate returned later to Crete to conduct her IKS-based PhD research under the supervision of LEAD on knowledge and use of MAC plants in two rural communities (see below).
